How does the American electoral system differ from our Canadian system?

Tuesday November 6 is election day in the United States.

This election is one of the most hard-fought and fractious contests in modern memory.  The polls at this point can’t predict who will win.

The result in Canada’s closest neighbour might turn on a little-known and somewhat mysterious body called the Electoral College.  Americans vote directly for their President, but ultimately, their votes must pass through the Electoral College before a winner is declared.

If you would like to know more about the American electoral system, and in particular, the significant ways in which it differs from our Canadian system, take a look at Peter Bowal and Lauren Stan‘s article in the November/December issue of LawNow:  “American and Canadian Election Laws: Top 10 Differences“.

Then you will be all set to watch events unfold south of our border.
